For the purpose of advancing the development of a machine-learning technology intended to decrease delays and conserve fuel at the Dallas/Fort Worth and Dallas Love Field airports, NASA has inked five-year agreements with American, Southwest, Delta, United, and JetBlue.
The FAA’s air traffic and airspace restriction data will be combined with flight-specific surface traffic data from the two airports and five airlines in the Collaborative Digital Departure Reroute tool in an effort to enhance air traffic operations.
In order to generate traffic forecasts regarding future runway availability and expected departure and arrival times, the programme uses machine learning to analyse this data.
According to NASA, the instrument will save more than 24,000 pounds of jet fuel in 2022 for planes leaving from Love Field and Dallas-Fort Worth.
